Freud is famous for his "dream interpretation," which is the interpretation of dreams. He divided the human mind into three layers: the conscious, the preconscious, and the unconscious. He believed that the unconscious contains repressed desires and memories that we are not aware of. He believed that our actions and thoughts are particularly strongly influenced by the unconscious.
He also divided the structure of the mind into the id (the primitive aspect of the mind that controls innate desires and impulses), the ego (the rational part that reconciles desires with realistic constraints), and the superego (which functions as moral standards and conscience, and plays a role in suppressing the id's impulses and making them conform to standards).Furthermore, he defined the instinctive motivation as life energy and sexual energy as the libido, and considered it the driving force behind human mental development and activity.
