Michelangelo began his career as an artist at the age of 13, and achieved fame as a sculptor when he created the "Pietà" in Rome at the age of 21. At the age of 26, he created the "David" statue, and went on to create masterpieces such as the ceiling paintings for the Sistine Chapel, "The Creation of the World" and "The Last Judgment."
He also worked as a military engineer and architect, and served as the chief architect of St. Peter's Basilica. He devoted himself to his work until just before his death in 1564 at the age of 88, and was called "a man like God."
Even today, there are many artists and athletes who are called "geniuses," and they too speak of the unstinting patience and hard work they have continued to put in. It seems that the idea that patience and hard work trump talent or circumstances has been around for over 500 years.
